چکیده

Philosophers and psychologists of language have coined the term "sortal" to refer to the concepts which underpin count nouns. A sortal is a concept which provides criteria for individuation and numerical identity. Criteria for individuation are the basis for counting; we cannot count without specifying a count noun such as "cat" or "table". Criteria for numerical identity (in the sense of one and the same one) are the basis for tracking individuals through time and space; we cannot ask questions about numerical identity without a count noun, e.g., "the same cat" or "the same table". Recent research has begun to address the question whether pre-linguistic infants represent sortal concepts (Spelke, Kestenbaum, Simons, & Wein, 1995; Xu & Carey, 1996).

Perisaccadic visual perception.

Primates use frequent, rapid eye movements to sample their visual environment. This is a fruitful strategy to make the best use of the highly sensitive foveal part of the retina, but it requires neural mechanisms to bind the rapidly changing visual input into a single, stable percept. Studies investigating these neural mechanisms have typically assumed that perisaccadic perception in nonhuman p...

Mycobacterium leprae genomes from naturally infected nonhuman primates

Leprosy is caused by the bacterial pathogens Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. Apart from humans, animals such as nine-banded armadillos in the Americas and red squirrels in the British Isles are naturally infected with M. leprae. Natural leprosy has also been reported in certain nonhuman primates, but it is not known whether these occurrences are due to incidental infections...

Nonhuman primates have been used as animal models in which to study cognitive changes associated with aging and age-related disease for decades. There are many advantages to using nonhuman primates for studies of aging including the capability to examine visual nonspatial cognitive processes and the ability to use operationally similar behavioral tasks to what is used with humans. Because some ...

Evaluation of the neural function of nonhuman primates with spinal cord injury using an evoked potential-based scoring system

Nonhuman primate models of spinal cord injury (SCI) have been widely used in evaluation of the efficacy and safety of experimental restorative interventions before clinical trials. However, no objective methods are currently available for the evaluation of neural function in nonhuman primates. In our long-term clinical practice, we have used evoked potential (EP) for neural function surveillanc...

Scientific Issues and Regulation of Primate Use

Some of the patterns of use of nonhuman primates in the USA and Europe are outlined and a few specific examples of inappropriate and/or unnecessary use are described. The primate research resources program in the USA is examined and some suggestions as to how the program could be made more responsive to humane and conservation concerns are presented. The National Primate Plan (U.S. Dept. of Hea...

Obesity and Aging in Humans and Nonhuman Primates: A Mini-Review.

The prevalence of obesity in the US is increasing exponentially across gender, age and ethnic groups. Obesity and a long-term hypercaloric diet result in what appears to be accelerated aging, often leading to a multi-systemic deterioration known as the metabolic syndrome. Due to their physiological similarity to humans as well as comparable rates of spontaneous obesity and diabetes mellitus, no...
